Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders declared Poinsett County a disaster area after a storm system swept through the county on June 25. Marked Tree, Lepanto and Tyronza sustained heavy damage from the storm. Sanders declaration read: WHEREAS: On or about June 25, 2023, severe storms and straight-line winds occurred, causing great damage to private property and public facilities in various jurisdictions across the State of Arkansas; WHEREAS: Adverse circumstances have been brought to bear upon citizens and public properties throughout the state; and WHEREAS: These political subdivisions require supplemental assistance from the State to recover from these losses.. ...

Jamarkius Garrett of Lepanto (EPC High School) signed to play football for the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff this past Saturday with family, friends and former teammates in attendance. Garrett, who play center and nose guard this past football season, helped guide the Warriors to a 10-3 record losing in the semi-finals of the Class 2A state football tournament. Sheri Lyn Street, self-described rebel and gypsy, of Harrisburg passed away peacefully on July 15 at the age of 58 at St. Bernards Medical Center in Jonesboro after a year-long battle with terminal cancer.
