DU golf tournament date set

Trumann Country Club will be the site for the Ducks Unlimited sponsored three man golf scramble on May 12th. The 27-hole event is set to start at 8:00 a.m. Entry fee will be $150 per team and lunch will be provided. Wood Ford will be giving away a new car for the first hole in one on hole number seven during the last round. All golfers will hit from the gold tees on this hole. Bobcats rip EPC in district semi-finals

The EPC Warriors and Walnut Ridge Bobcats met in the semi-finals of the Class 2A-3 district baseball tournament this past Saturday in Marked Tree. The Bobcats jumped out early and never looked back as they posted a 11-0 victory. Eric Wilcoxson opened the game for Walnut Ridge with a triple and came in to score on a sacrifice fly by Cole Hicks for a 1-0 Bobcats lead. Zach Crisler bunted for a base hit before Hunter Flippo took a pitch and sent it over the left field fence for a two-run home run giving Walnut Ridge (25-5) a 3-0 lead after an inning of play. EPC got back to back singles from Hunter Hinton and McKenzie Butts to open the top of the second. Courtesy runner Trevor McDaniel was picked off second on a throw from the catcher and Cayne Tyler hit into an inning ending double play to stop the rally. The Bobcats added four more runs in the bottom of the second with the big hit coming from Hicks has he cleared the bases with a three-run triple. Crisler plated Hicks with a single to make the score 7-0 after two innings. Walnut Ridge scored their final runs in the bottom of the fourth. Flippo drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, Teague Phillips had a two-run double and Rowdy Ditto had a RBI single to set the final score. Harston took the loss for EPC giving up 11 runs on 11 hits while striking out five and walking three. Range Weeks got the win for Walnut Ridge allowing no runs on five hits as he walked none and struck out five. Josh Skipper collected two hits for EPC on the day. Hinton, Butts and Byron Scales all had a hit. Hicks led the Bobcats at the plate with a hit, two runs and four RBIs. Flippo had a hit, a run and three RBIs.

Wildcats lose to Westside in district finals

Trumann and Westside met this past Monday in the finals of the Class 4A-3 baseball district championship in Pocahontas. Westside claimed the title with a six-inning run rule 10-0 decision. Westside got out of the gate early scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. Jared Fuqua led off the inning with a double and came in to score on a single by Justin Fuqua. Garrett Shackleford, courtesy runner for Ju. Fuqua, scored on a double by J.T. Nortier. Lucas Johnston plated Nortier with a RBI single to make the score 3-0 after the first inning. Trumann came close to getting on the board in the top of the second. Zach Vinson reached via a fielder's choice and advanced to second when Dylan Dulaney drew a walk. Vinson got to third on a passed ball. Vinson took off for home on another passed ball but Johnston got the ball to Ju. Fuqua covering the plate to tag out Vinson. The Warriors added run in the bottom of the fourth as Johnston drew a walk to open the inning. Courtesy runner Kody Sullins stole second and later went to third on a wild pitch. Sullins scored on a passed ball to make it 4-0. Westside increased the lead to 7-0 in the bottom of the fifth. Drake Cullum led off by reaching base on an error. Nick Hoffman came in to pinch run for Cullum. Ja. Fuqua singled to put runners on first and second. Wildcat pitcher Michael Criss tired to pick Hoffman off second base but no one was covering the bag and both runners advanced a base when the ball went into the outfield. Ju. Fuqua was hit by pitch to load the bases. Dylan Clark scored Hoffman with a sacrifice fly. Josh Baked drove in the final two runs of the inning with a single. The Wildcats got two runners on with two outs in the top of the sixth before Ju. Fuqua struck out Vinson to end the inning. Westside scored three runs in their half of the inning to end the game. Tyler Hart reached base on an error to get things started for the Warriors. Hart scored when pinch hitter Zack Anderson hit a double. Cameron Jones came on in relief of Criss and was greeted by a single from Cullum. Ju. Fuqua drove in Anderson with a double before Nortier plated Ja. Fuqua with the game ending run. Criss took the loss for Trumann going five innings and allowing nine runs. He walked one, struck out four and hit two batters. Jones pitched an inning giving up one run on two hits with no walks and no strikeouts. Justin Fuqua got the win as he pitched all six innings allowing no runs on four hits. He struck out six and walked three. Nate Maxwell led Trumann at the plate with three hits. Jay Ryan Woods had the Wildcats other hit. Nortier and Ju. Fuqua both had two hit and two RBIs to lead Westside. Ja. Fuqua added two hit and three runs scored.

Unico Bank recognizes athletes

Unico Bank recently named their final basketball award recipients. Morgan Taylor (l) was named player of the month for January and Jazmye Nixon was named player of the year for the Lady Wildcats. Nate Maxwell (l) was tabbed as player of the month for January and Malcolm Washington got the award for player of the year for the Wildcats. Congratulations!

Lady Indians claim district tournament title

Marked Tree's Peyton Carter and BIC's Madison Greathouse hooked up in a pitcher's duel this past Saturday in the championship game of the Class 2A-3 girls' district softball champion ship. The Lady Indians plated a couple runs in the fourth and Carter allowed only two singles the res of they way as the Lady Indians claimed the title. The pitchers were on cruise control for the first three innings of the game as the team's combined for three hits. Marked Tree finally broke through in the top of fourth against Greathouse. Carter reached base on an error before Shelby Knight drew a walk and was replaced by courtesy runner Caflora Hillis. Hillis and Carter both moved up a base on a passed ball before Carter raced home on a wild pitch to make the score 1-0. Paige Blansett delivered a two-out RBI single to set the score at 2-0 after 3 ½ innings of play. BIC tried to make one last run in the bottom of the seventh. Bailey Owens started things off with a single. Katelyn Sparkman came on to pinch run for Owens. Carter buckled down retiring the next three batters to end the game. Carter got the win also going all seven innings. She gave up no runs on four hits and struck out nine batters with no walks. Greathouse took the loss pitching all seven innings. She gave up two runs on two hits while striking out six and walking one batter. Blansett led Marked Tree with a hit and a RBI. Carter added a hit and run scored as Hillis scored a run too. Greathouse, Callie Brooks, Kelsey Strickland and Owens all had had a hit for BIC.
