Bay falls to Mustangs (High School Sports ~ 04/26/12)
Bay hosted BIC this past Monday in high school baseball action. The Mustangs (11-9) jumped out early only to see Bay (7-17) take the lead before BIC re-took the lead and held on for the win. Jeremy Smith led off the game for BIC reaching base on an error. Wes Colbert reached base on a fielder's choice with Smith being forced out at second base. Austin Pike reached on another Bay error before Mark Stone plated both runners with a double to give the Mustangs the lead 2-0 headed to the bottom of the first inning. John Stephens opened things up for Bay with a double. Kail Harris drove Stephens in with a single and took second on the throw to the plate. Hunter Percell was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Randy Robbins scored Harris with an RBI single. Jake Martin and Nate Smith both drew walks with Smith's walk bring in Percell. Jacob Sanders replaced Pike on the mound after the Smith walk. Seth Barnett worked a two out walk to score Robbins and give the 'Jackets a 4-2 lead after one inning of play. BIC responded with four runs in the top half of the second inning. Logan DeWitt started things off reaching on an error and advancing to second on a wild throw. DeWitt advanced to third when Justin Barnes reached on an error. DeWitt scored on a ground out by Smith and Barnes scored on a double by Colbert. Pike plated Colbert before coming around to score on a double by Stone to make the score 6-4. Bay scored a run in the bottom of the inning when Percell reached on an error, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on a RBI single from Robbins. The score was 6-5 after two innings. The scored stayed 6-5 until the Mustangs added two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Stone walked before back to back singles from Devon Ballin and Josh McCormick scored Stone. DeWitt drove in Ballin with a single to make the score 8-5. Bay scored a run in their half of the inning as Percell and Dylan Rush both singled with one out in the inning. Percell came in to score on a RBI single from Martin to make the score 8-6. BIC set the final score in the top of the fifth inning. Pike reached on an error with two outs and scored when Stone doubled to make the score 9-6. Smith came on to pitch in the bottom of the sixth for BIC. Bay had two runners on base with one out before a BIC double play ended the inning. Smith finished Bay off with three strikeouts in the bottom of the seventh. Harris took the loss for Bay going five innings, allowing nine runs on eight hits while issuing four walks and striking out six Sanders got the win for BIC while Smith earned the save. Sanders pitched 4 2/3 innings giving up two runs on five hits. He walked one and struck out four. Smith allowed no runs on one hit while striking out three and walking none. Robbins led Bay at the plate with two hits, a run and two RBIs. Harris had a hit, a run and a RBI with Percell collecting a hit and scoring three runs. BIC was led offensively by Stone's three hits, all doubles, a run and four RBIs. Ballin had three hits and a run, Colbert collected two hits, scored two runs and had a RBI. Pike has a hit, three runs scored and a RBI. -
EPC swats Hornets (High School Sports ~ 04/26/12)
EPC hosted Harrisburg in high school baseball action this past Tuesday. The Hornets (6-14) jumped out early only to see the Warriors (15-14) come back and gain a 16-6 victory. Harrisburg got the board in their half of the first inning as Kyle Vincent reached on an error before stealing second base. Ayson Lamb drove in Vincent with a single for the games' first run. Lamb stole second base before scoring on a two-out single by Fisher Cox to make the score 2-0. EPC got the board in the bottom of the inning when Byron Scales singled and then went to second on a balk by Hornet pitcher Matt Walton. Caleb Harston, who had four hits on the day, plated Scales to make the score 3-1 after one inning. Kyle Mitchell drew a walk to lead off the top of the second for the Hornets. Mitchell stole second base and came around to score on an Arizona Sharp single making the score 3-1. EPC scored five runs in the bottom of the inning to go up 6-3. Josh Skipper drew a one-out walk before Corbin Truelove and Aaron Scales both worked walks with two outs. Byron Scales grounded to Harrisburg's third baseman Sharp who bobbled the ball allowing Skipper to score and extend the inning. Harston drove in Truelove and Aaron Scales with a single. Harston came home when Hornet catcher Garrett Grubbs over threw third on a pick-off attempt to make the score 6-3 EPC after two innings. Mitchell opened the inning reaching base on an error by EPC third baseman Josh Skipper. Mitchell stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. Mitchell scored on a ground out by Sharp making the score 6-4 in favor of the Warriors. EPC answered with two runs in their half of the inning. Aaron Scales got on base via an error before he stole second and went to third on a passed ball. Byron Scales lofted a sacrifice fly to score Aaron Scales. Harston followed with a double and came around to score on a single by Hunter Hinton to make the score 8-4. Josh Skipper came on to pitch for EPC in the top of the fifth inning and allowed two runs. Grubbs tripled to open the inning. Brayden Honeycutt, courtesy runner for Grubbs, scored on a ground out by Cox. Colin McCrary walked and Drew Price came in as a courtesy runner. Price scored when Sharp reached on an EPC error to make the score 8-6. Sharp relieved Walton in the bottom of the fifth inning for Harrisburg and was greeted by an explosion of runs from the Warriors. Cayne Tyler was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Tyler went to second when Sharp tried to pick him off first and made an errant throw. Josh Skipper singled to put runners on first and third. Zach Newsome drew a walk to load the bases. Truelove laced a two-run single scoring Tyler and courtesy runner Seth Lacy. Aaron Scales reached on an error before Harston delivered a two-run singled to score courtesy runner Chandler Smith and Truelove making the score 12-6 EPC. Hinton doubled to score Aaron Scales and Harston before Tyler and Josh Skipper each had back to back RBI singles. Tyler's hit scored courtesy runner Trevor McDaniel and Skipper's hit scored Tyler who had stolen second base. Tyler's run made the score 16-6 ending the game via the run rule. Austin Price got the win for EPC going four innings. He gave up four runs on four hits while striking out three and walking three. Skipper pitched one inning giving up two runs on one hit as he walked two and struck out one. Walton took the loss for Harrisburg giving up eight runs on five hits. Walton walked three and had four strikeouts. Sharp pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up seven runs on six hits as he struck out one and walked one. Martin pitched one third of an inning giving up two hits and one run. Harston led EPC at the plate with four hits, three runs and four RBIs. Hinton added two hits and three RBIs as Trulove had a hit, two runs and two RBIs. Aaron Scales scored three runs. Harrisburg was led offensively by Sharp who had a hit and two RBIs. Mitchell scored two runs and stole two bases. Lamb had a hit, run and RBI to go along with two steals. -
Trumann erupts against Raiders (High School Sports ~ 04/26/12)
It was senior day for two Trumann Wildcats and their teammates gave them a game they would remember. Michael Criss and Dylan Dulaney were recognized in pre-game festivities. Josh Evans gave Trumann 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first as he blasted a grand slam home run to center field. Cameron Jones and Dillin Vincent both had reached on errors before Criss laid down a bunt single to load the bases. The Wildcats plated seven more runs in the bottom of the second inning. Taylor Wilson had the big hit of the inning with a two run double that scored Dulaney and Zach Vinson. Vinson and Jones each had an RBI in the inning. Nettleton plated a run in the top of the third inning when Hunter Simpson drove in Garrett Andrews with a single to make the score 11-1. Trumann answered with six more runs in the bottom of the inning. Vinson had a RBI single and Jones plated a run when he reached via a fielder's choice. Criss picked up the five inning win giving up the one run on four hits. He gave up no walks. Evans had a good day at the plate for the Wildcats with two hits, two runs and four RBI. Wilson had two hits, a run and two RBIs with Vinson adding a hit, two runs and two RBIs. Jones added three runs on the day. -
Lady 'Cats rally late to beat GCT (High School Sports ~ 04/26/12)
Trumann's Lady Wildcats scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and Hannah Walters retired the side in order in the top of the seventh as the Lady 'Cats posted a 5-4 victory over Greene County Tech. Trumann (16-12) scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning to take the early lead. Sarah Halfacre opened the inning with a single and took second base on an error by the right fielder. Sammie Jo Williams singled to put runners on first and third. Halfacre scored when Kelly Guthrie reached on an error and Williams advanced to third. Walters plated both Williams with and Guthrie with a double to give Trumann a 3-0 lead after one inning. GCT finally figured Walters out in the top of the fourth. Katlyn Gomer and Kasey Parker both singled around a walk by Shayna Beaver to load the bases for the Lady Eagles. Destry Mallard cleared the bases with a three run triple down the right field line. Mallard scored on a Wildcat error to put GCT up 4-3 after 3 ½ innings of play. Cilla White opened the bottom of the sixth with a double for Trumann. Megan McGowan singled and took second on a GCT error putting runners on second and third. Halfacre singled to drive in White and tie the game with McGowan going to third. Guthrie laid down a bunt and when the pitcher threw to first McGowan took off for home and slid in with the go ahead run. Walters retired the side in order in the top of the seventh as Trumann won 5-4. Walters pitched all seven innings giving up four runs on five hits. She walked one and struck out eight batters. Beaver took the loss for GCT as she pitched all six innings. She allowed five runs on 11 hits with no walks and three strikeouts. Halfacre, Walters and McGowan each collected two hits for Trumann. Williams, White, Halfacre, Guthrie and McGowan all scored a run as Walters had two RBIs and Halfacre and Guthrie each had a RBI. Mallard led GCT at the plate with a triple, run scored and three RBIs. Gomer, Parker and Shealynn Clark all scored a run for the Lady Eagles.
