Trumann Lions Club golf tournament

The Trumann Lions Club Charity Golf Classic will be held April 21st, 2012 at the Trumann Country Club. This year's tournament will be played in the the memory of JoAnn Conatser, Bill Cook and Carmack Johnson. The one day tournament for two-person teams will have a nine-hole scramble in the morning, lunch while teams are flighted and then an 18-hole scramble in the afternoon. Entry fee is $100 per team. Cash prizes awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each flight. Closest to the pin, longest putt and longest drive awards to be awarded. Call 870-483-7627 to sign up or for more information.

Warriors use long ball to down 'Cats (High School Sports ~ 04/19/12)
Westside travelled to Trumann this past Tuesday for a key 4A-3 conference match up Trumann. Westside used three home runs and a one-hit pitching performance from Dylan Clark to hand the Wildcats a 7-0 loss. Each team had a hit in their half of the first inning. J.T. Nortier doubled for the Warriors and A.J. Winningham singled for the Wildcats. Trumann's hit would be their only hit of the game. Lucas Johnston opened the top half the second inning with a solo homerun to give Westside a 1-0 lead. Tyler Hart drew a two-out walk and Drake Cullum followed with a two-run homerun to make the score 3-0. Zach Vinson opened Trumann's half of the second inning with a walk. Vinson was forced out at second on a fielder's choice ground ball from Dylan Dulaney. Jay Ryan Woods and Josh Evans worked back to backs walks to load the bases with two outs. Cameron Jones flied out to center field with the bases loaded to end the inning. Justin Fuqua opened the third with a single and came around to score when Nortier hit a line shot over the center field fence for a 5-0 Westside lead. Johnston laced a one-out single and advanced to third when the ball got past the right fielder. Josh Baker plated Johnston with a single putting the score at 6-0. Clark hit his grove in the bottom of the third inning and went on retire the next 15 Trumann batters. Westside added a run in the top of seventh inning with Clark drawing a walk to start the inning. Vinson replaced Nate Maxwell on the mound. Garrett Shackleford entered as a courtesy runner for Clark and made his way to third via a passed ball and ground out before scoring the final run of the game on a wild pitch. Maxwell took the loss for Trumann going six innings while giving up seven runs on 10 hits with three walks and eight strikeouts. Vinson pitched the final inning striking out two and walking one. Clark got the win for Westside going all seven innings. He allowed one hit, walked three and recorded seven strikeouts. Justin Fuqua collected three hits for the Warriors and scored a run. Nortier had a homerun and double to go with a run scored and two RBIs. Johnston also had a homerun to go with a single, two runs scored and a RBI. Cullum added a homerun, run scored and two RBIs. -
Indians shut out Harrisburg

Jagger McCrary pitched a one-hitter this past Tuesday as the Marked Tree Indians shut out the Harrisburg Hornets 13-0 in high school baseball action in Marked Tree. The Indians (23-7) were led offensively by Bryant Anderson who collected three hits on the day with six RBIs. Dylan Hunt had two hits and two RBIs, Taylor Wages finished with two hits and scored three runs and Gunner Pitts had two hits, three runs and two stolen bases. Pitts two stolen bases gives him 50 on the season and puts him five behind the state single season record of 55. Aaron Fowler of Cross County set the state record in 2000. McCrary pitched all five innings striking out four and walking one.

Carter throws no hitter against Bay (High School Sports ~ 04/19/12)
Marked Tree's Peyton Carter threw a three inning no-hitter this past Monday as the Lady Indians beat the Bay Lady Yellowjackets 16-0. Carter struck out six of the nine batters she faced. Marked Tree, playing as the visitor due to wet field conditions forcing the game to be moved from Bay, started off fast with eight runs in the first inning. The big hits in the inning were Carter and Holly Smith each having two run triples and Janelle Adams driving in a run with a double. The Lady Indians scored five more to make the score 13-0 after an inning and a half of play. Poohnu Perry and Adams both had RBI singles in the inning with Perry collecting two stolen bases. Marked Tree tacked on three more runs in the top of the third to set the final score. Kelsey Pitts had a single and two stolen bases and scored on a Bay error. Paige Blansett and Breanna Francis each scored a run in the inning. Smith led Marked Tree had three hits, a run scored and two RBIs on the day. Adams collected two hits and two RBIs, Carter had a hit, run scored and two RBIs, Poohnu Perry had a hit, two runs scored and three stolen bases and Pitts scored two runs and stole two bases. Carter worked all three innings allowing no hits, no runs, no walks and struck out six. -
Area players shine in Senior Classic

The Sun Senior Classic was held this past Sunday in Jonesboro and a few of the seniors in the area had a chance to participate. Gunner Freeman of Bay, Malcolm Washington of Trumann and A.J. Turner of EPC played in the boys' game while Terrika Madden and Brittany Ball of EPC played in the girls' game. Freeman was named MVP of the boys' game as he scored 24 points to lead the White team to a 90-80 win over the Blue team. Teammate Turner had a nice game with eight points and 13 rebounds. Washington, playing for the Blue team, had 15 points, 10 rebounds and two blocked shots. Teammates in high school, Ball and Madden were on opposite teams for this game. Ball scored 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the White team's 83-68 victory. Madden had 13 points and four rebounds for the Blue team.

Harris, Bay shut out Weiner (High School Sports ~ 04/19/12)
Bay's Kail Harris had a tremendous game last Friday as Bay hosted Weiner in high school baseball action. Harris struck out 15 batters and allowed only two hits while his three-run homerun ended the game via the run rule as the 'Jackets posted a 12-0 win over the Cardinals. John Stephens got thing started for Bay in the bottom of the first as he led off with a solo homerun to give Bay a quick 1-0 lead. Hunter Percell singled and stole second before scoring on a single by Randy Robbins. Robbins stole second and scored on a single by Jake Martin to extend Bay's lead to 3-0 after one inning of play. Harris singled to lead off Bay's half of the third inning. Harris stole second and scored when Dylan Rush reached on an error. Rush went to second on the overthrow and to third when Percell reached on an error. Rush scored on a wild pitch to put the score at 5-0. Percell made his way to third via a passed ball and wild pitch and scored on a ground out from Robbins to make the score 6-0 after three innings. Percell reached on an error with two outs in the bottom of the fifth. He scored on an error by the catcher when he couldn't handle the throw in from Robbins' double. Martin plated Robbins with an RBI single to make the score 9-0 after the fifth inning. Seth Barnett reached on an error before Stephens singled to put runners on first and third. Harris ended the game when he launched a shot over the left field fenced to make the score 12-0. Harris went all six innings in gaining the win. He allowed two hits with five walks and 15 strikeouts. Grant Johnson took the loss working 6 1/3 innings giving up 12 runs on nine hits. He walked none and recorded eight strikeouts. Stephens, Robbins and Martin all had two hits for Bay. Harris had three RBIs with Martin and Robbins each having two RBIs. Percell scored three runs while Stephens, Robbins and Harris each scored two runs. Logan Bray and Johnson each had a hit for the Cardinals.
