Trumann Wildcats drop conference opener

Trumann opened conference play by hosting Westside this past Monday in a 4A-3 match up. The Warriors jumped out early and led the entire game on their way to a 61-56 victory. The Wildcats (5-2, 0-1) were led in scoring by Nate Maxwell with 16 points. Lee Conatser added 15 points and Malcolm Washington scored 10. Trumann won the junior high contest 25-14 behind 13 points from Taylor Wilson. Trumann will play Highland Thursday night in a game not on the schedule. Junior high boys' will play at 5 p.m. with senior high to follow at 6.

Lady 'Cats tumble at Brookland

Trumann's Lady Wildcats travelled to Brookland this past Friday for a 4A-3 conference game with the Brookland Lady Bearcats. The hosts would lead after every quarter on their way to a 64-40. Jazmyn Nixon led Trumann in scoring on the night with 12 points. Trumann's Junior Lady Wildcats also fell to Brookland, 54-32.

Wildcats beat Highland in OT

Trumann hosted the Lady Rebels from Highland this past Tuesday and needed over time to post a 40-35 win. With the scored tied 33 all at the end of regulation, Trumann would outscore their visitors seven to two in overtime. Jazmyn Nixon led all scorers on the night with 27 points. Trumann won the junior high contest 21-16.

Lady Indians win in overtime

The Lady Indians needed overtime to get by the BIC Mustangs this past Monday in Marked Tree. The 66-63 victory put the Lady Indians in a first place in the 2A-3 conference. Jay Perry led three Marked Tree (7-5, 5-1) players in double figures with 25 points. She also grabbed 11 rebounds on the night. Poohnu Perry tossed in 21 points as Quanny Perry contributed 12 in the win.

Bay rolls over Black Rock

Bay raced out to a 21-point lead in the first quarter and never looked back as they went on to beat Black Rock 66-28 in a 1A-3 East conference game this past Friday in Black Rock. Dylan Loven and Oliver Tyson paced Bay (13-3) with 20 and 15 points respectively. Bay also won the junior high game, 52.28

Marked Tree downed by Buffalo Island Central

Marked Tree hosted Buffalo Island Central in a senior high boys' basketball game this past Tuesday night. BIC held on for a 63-58 victory over the Indians. Trailing 48-41 entering the fourth period, Marked Tree tied the game at 54 with 2:50 left in the game. The game was back and forth until BIC sealed the game late with their free throw shooting. Allen Buchanan led the Indians in scoring with 24 points. Darius Ivy chipped in 15 and Thadious Moore finished with 10. "We didn't play well for the first three quarters," Coach Barbara Wilburn said after the game. "We decided to play in the last quarter but it was a little to late." In the junior high game, BIC hit a basket with four seconds left to win 44-42. Terry Carter scored 15 for the Junior Indians.

Strong finish lifts Lady Warriors to win

EPC used a strong final period to break open a tied ball game on their way to a 57-50 win in Rector this past Monday. With the game tied at 38 heading into the final frame, the Lady Warriors (7-5, 3-2 2A-3) scored 19 points while holding Rector to 12 for the win. Brittany Ball led all scorers with 20 points for EPC. Teammates Terrika Madden and Whitney Ball added 19 and 12 points respectively. EPC hit the boards hard as Alicia Ross and Whitney Ball both had 13 rebounds while Brittany Ball added 10. Amelia Worsham scored 18 points to lead the EPC Junior Lady Warriors to a 41 -24 victory.

Trumann wins third at Pre-Holiday Tourney

Trumann bounced back from their tough semi-final loss to Nettleton by beating Brookland to take third place in the Boys' Pre-Holiday tournament in Weiner. In the Nettleton game, Trumann got down early in the first half, clawed their way back to tie the game twice in the second half but in the end the Wildcats suffered their first loss of the season, 60-57. This was the third time these teams have met in the early season. Trumann came out on fire to start the third quarter. An 11-2 run tied the game at 26 early in the third. Dylan Dulaney and Lee Conatser each hit three pointers to stop Nettleton runs keeping the score 37-34 Nettleton after three periods of play. Trumann took a brief lead, their first of the game, as Matt Holt hit a three-pointer midway through the final period. Nettleton took back the lead for good with a three-pointer of their own on their way to the victory. Holt led a trio in double figures for Trumann with 16 points. Malcolm Washington added 15 points while Conatser had 10 points. Against Brookland, Malcolm Washington put on a show as he scored 33 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and had eight blocked shots as the Wildcats (5-1) took third place with a 67-53 win. Matt Holt tossed in 13 points for Trumann too.

Indians take second at Armorel

Marked Tree recently took second place in the Gerald Jennings Tournament held at Armorel. The Indians squeaked by EPC 56-53 in the semi-finals before falling to Valley View 69-61 in the championship game. Against EPC, Marked Tree used a big fourth period to get the win. Down 43-36 entering the fourth quarter, the Indians outscored the Warriors 20-10. Darius Ivy led Marked Tree with 21 points. Thadious Moore scored 13 as Gunner Pitts and Allen Buchanan chipped in 10 a piece. A.J. Turner was the leading score for EPC with 16. Jammar Sturdivant and Wendell Pritchett added 15 and 11 points respectively. In the championship game, Marked Tree lost to Valley View 69-61. Darius Ivy led four players in double figures for the Indians with 19 points. Allen Buchanan had 17, Thadious Moore 13 and Daniel Rucker 10. "We were a different team from the first half to the second," Coach Barbara Wilburn said. "This was our fifth game of the week, I could see our legs getting weak in the second half. Valley View is a great team and we were proud of the way we finished."
