Ms. Stephanie Clay, Marked Tree Junior High English teacher, has been awarded the regional Teacher of the Year by Wal-Mart and the Miss America organization. Not only did Ms. Clay receive the most votes from the students, they exclaimed how Ms. Clay goes above and beyond the duties of a classroom teacher. One student wrote, "I feel like I could tell Ms. Clay my biggest secret and she would not tell anyone." Another said, "She's always so bubbly and energetic. Her class is just fun."...

A new exhibit opened this week at the Delta Area Museum in Marked Tree. "The Legacy Collection, Arkansas Made," supports the theme of Arkansas' Heritage Month and provides a looking glass into the lives of Arkansas residents who designed, crafted and made many items for use in their everyday lives...

NEA Raceway will be opening Memorial Day weekend for its first race. The gates will open Saturday, May 26, at 8 a.m. and the first race will begin at 10 a.m. for ATV and Motocross. The track is conveniently located right off Highway 63B in Marked Tree, right behind the Travelair Motel. There is a division for just about everyone-young, old, male and female, and if you don't care to race, just take a lawn chair and watch the excitement...

Two Marked Tree seniors have been awarded the Wyatt Boxley Memorial Lions Club Scholarship for 2001. Brittany Pearson, daughter of Lion Janet Pearson, and Chris Crockett, daughter of Lion Darlene Crockett, are the recipients of this year's award. Wyatt Boxley was a charter member of the Marked Tree Lions Club when it was organized on April 9, 1930. ...

Mrs. Estelle Kathleen 'Katy' Johnson, 69, of Marked Tree, passed away Monday, May 7, at St. Bernard's Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro. Mrs. Johnson was a member of the Church of God. She was preceded in death by one son, Terry Lynn Johnson, and two sisters, Earline and Maxine...

Thomas Jefferson 'T.J.' Pate, 77, of Victoria, passed away Thursday, May 10, at the Manila Nursing Center. Mr. Pate was a retired farmer and was of the Pentecostal faith. Survivors include one daughter, Margie Riney of Osceola; one son, Thomas Pate of Victoria; one sister, Pearl Tucker of Harrisburg; one brother, Earl Pate of Lepanto; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren...
